LONG BEACH ZINE FEST presents THE ZINE TABLE – a panel discussion on DIY, counterculture, and zines, curated by Brodie Hubbard.

This edition will be moderated by Myriam Gurba, a Sister Spit contributor, and author of Dahlia Season and the upcoming Painting Their Portraits in Winter.

The topic: DIY, counterculture, and zine history in Long Beach and Southern California.

Our panelists:

Francesca Lia Block, author of the Dangerous Angels Weetzie Bat stories, her latest book Beyond The Pale Motel, and the how-to zine guide Zine Scene: The Do It Yourself Guide to Zines.
Greg Narvas, drummer of Hepcat and writer and artist of the comic zine I Was A Teenage Filipino Skinhead.
Teka-Lark Fleming, publisher of Morningside Park Chronicle, journalist, literary event organizer, and producer and host of online program The Blk Grrrl Show.
Senay Kenfe, a poet, journalist, and rapper from The Natives.

After many hours spent pouring over more than 200 (!) vendor applications for the first-ever Long Beach Zine Fest, the LBZF 2015 vendor team has sent out acceptance letters to more than 100 zinesters!

Thank you so much to everyone who applied. We wish we had space for everyone … all of the applications were really high quality and the decisions were not easy! Major props to our vendor team: Sara Todd (team lead), Daniel Garcia, Lowell Ong, Brodie Hubbard, and Vanessa Rosales!

Museum of Latin American Art
Sunday, March 8th 1pm – 4pm.

1PM — PANEL: “FEMINISM and MEDIA” – in the Screening room
Discuss how feminism has changed in relation to the mediums by which its ideas are distributed, ie: zines/music in the 80-90’s, academic feminism, and the internet today.

2-4PM — WORKSHOP: “CHAPBOOK WORKSHOP” – in the Art Classroom
Join us to learn about the step-by-step process of how to design, organize, and create a chapbook of poetry using Word. Participants can bring laptops with Word installed or just follow along with a hand out. They will view various chapbook examples and share some of their own ideas.

This workshop is hosted by Sadie Girl Press, a small press dedicated to creating print form collections of poetry, art, and beyond! Began in April 2014, SGP works with emerging poets and artists to give physical form to their work.

Here are two more discussion workshops that will be happening at Long Beach Zine Fest 2015, curated by Brodie Hubbard.

BAD BITCHES is a workshop that seeks to empower gender marginalized people of color. BAD BITCHES aims to create a movement based on resisting assimilation within leftist culture and mainstream culture and rewrite radical collective history, together.

Nyky Gomez (Brown Recluse Zine Distro, “Skinned Heart” zine) and Ari Perezdiez (“MAXIMUMROCKNROLL,” “La Bola de Cristal”) will facilitate this workshop and roundtable discussion for women, trans*, and queer people of color.

MORE THAN A FEELING – Why Perzines Are More Than Just Photocopied Journals: Jessie Lynn McMains (Reckless Chants) presents this discussion on how to translate everything from little everyday moments to big life-changing events into entertaining and expressive storytelling.

Vendor Apps Close

Our Vendor Applications closed shortly after midnight this morning, and we have been very humbled by the response we got. Huge thank you to over 200 of you that applied to share your zines at the Long Beach Zine Fest. Our vendor team has some very tough decisions ahead of them, and as much as we wish we could provide a table for everyone, there’s only so much space we have. We will be sending out emails by the beginning of March to every single applicant, and we appreciate your patience as we get through the mountain of applications we have.

We look forward to celebrating the DIY culture in Long Beach with all of you on Sunday April 12th at the Museum of Latin American Art (MoLAA) in Downtown Long Beach, and be sure to follow and talk to us through our Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram!

The LBZF Events team has been busy putting together a variety of awesome workshops, presentations, and panels for the Long Beach Zine Fest and we’re excited to be able to announce our first featured events!

Mending Your Dress: Coping With Trauma Through Writing

Hosted by NeelyBat Chestnut (Mend My Dress Press). Presentation on sharing, oversharing, and not sharing.

NeelyBat Chestnut has been printing her own zines since 2005, writing about topics including incest, self-harm, coming of age and survival. After forming Mend My Dress Press in 2012, she started helping others put their stories out into the world by publishing anthologies and offering a vast catalog as a zine distributor.

In this presentation, Chestnut will offer her insights on the formidable task of writing about deeply personal and vulnerable topics, such as physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, as well as the balance between sharing and oversharing.

Speed Zine Pal-ing

Hosted by Zineworks. Meet new zine friends and collaborators in this speed pal-ing event!

Zineworks is a collective of Southern California artists, organizers, and educators that provides community workshops and resources for zine-making and creative self-publishing. Most often you can find Zineworks all around So Cal at print, zine and art fests, including DIY Print Fest and Coachella, hosting booths for people where people can both learn about zines and make their own.

At LBZF, Zineworks will host the Speed Zine Pal-ing at LBZF, where participants will meet multiple prospective zine pals in speed-dating fashion. This workshop is intended to promote and foster zine community and possible zine collaborations, by sharing zines with new people in one convenient, buddy-centric event. Each time the bell dings, you will have a new zine pal prospect awaiting you!
