CSULB Graphic Design BFA Fall ’19


We are a design class of twenty five designers with twenty five different life experiences and perspectives which is evident through the variety and mediums of our zines. Each zine is as unique as we are individual. From personal experiences of long-distance love, lighthearted dad jokes, or visual exploration of what it means to be alive; the only thing that unifies us is the freeing medium that are zines.

When did you start making zines ... and why?

We were assigned zines as a project in our experiential design class as a way to expand our visual vocabulary of what a book should or could be. We really enjoyed the opportunity to make zines that broke outside of the traditional and expected contents of books and three column layouts that we are so used to. Since the project, we have continued to use zines as a nice creative break and exploration.

What is your favorite part of making zines?

We are all in the graphic design program at CSULB and live in a world of deadlines and marketability that can often feel stifled and contained to what fits on our screens. Zines have been a way to create actual tangible works of arts to express ourselves outside of the branding and corporate applications of design.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to start making zines?

There is not a wrong way to make a zine so just do it! That is why zines are so wonderful and freeing: there are no set of definitive rules of what your zines should look like or be about. They are the perfect medium to express something about yourself and your point of view. (Also, be kind to your local Fedex Office Printshop employees!)
