My zines contain my short stories, poems, and sketches. I'm a narrative non-fiction writer, so many of my pieces stem from real events or insecurities I face every day. Just like everyone else, I'm still trying to find out who I am. I make zines in order to help myself explore areas of my life that are very vulnerable, but that will ultimately teach me things about myself I'm dying to learn.
I actually started making zines very recently! I always wanted to self-publish my writing, but never really knew how to start. A friend of mine told me about zines and so I began researching it right away. Although I was researching how to create zines for a long time, I didn't have the courage to begin making and sharing them until just a few months ago.
I enjoy every aspect of making zines! My writing and sketches are such an extension of myself so the fact that the creation of zines is such a hands-on/do it yourself process makes the end result feel that much more personal to me. Being able to share my zines with others makes me feel like I'm opening the door to my mind and welcoming them inside; it's such an incredible feeling.
There are 3 things I would tell them: Start right now! Don't think too much about making it perfect! And be brave with what you share!
I know that it can be intimidating to start, or you may think "I don't know how to make zines! How am I supposed to do this? Am I doing this right??" But just remember there are no rules to this and you can create any kind of content you wish. You deserve to share your voice and ideas just as much as anyone else, so begin right away!
