The Frugal Meeple
Viet and Jackie were in college, and feeling depressed, disillusioned, uninspired, and listless. Making zines was our way to find meaning, purpose in our lives. Plus, it provided a much-needed creative outlet. We met a lot of interesting people — artists, musicians, fellow zinesters — and it gave us motivation to keep making things!
We get to meet people we would otherwise not have met. Making art is a powerful way of communicating. It beyond mundane, courteous interactions based on social mores that are transactional. We get to share secret parts of us that we normally hide for fear of rejection. It helps us open up to others, and leads to important discussions. We can be our authentic selves through zines. Plus, we don't have to ask permission to share our stories. Through DIY printing, we have the power to create whatever we want.
