I've come to fully embrace zine-making as a way to make absolutely whatever I want since I find it difficult to do so in my career of choice. Zine-making doesn't feel performative at all, just something deeply personal and sincere, and I enjoy that about it. I like that I can be as introspective and emotional as I want, or vapid and goofy as I want when I make zines.
I've observed that the zine-making community itself is so welcoming and open to new creators! Since artists are often communicating things they deeply care about through their work it allows me and other people to see who shares our values, thoughts, questions, etc. and sort of opens the way for safe and comfortable communication.
