Zines allow me to express myself with my hands, through my work. Putting it on paper in the format of a book or a narrative helps me understand and reflect on my own feelings and identity. I express my identity with visual language in my zines. When i first came out, I made a zine about it. I was really nervous to put it out, but once I did, it helped me as well as others more then I could have imagined!
Zines are these personal little things people make just because they care, because they are passionate about the subject and they want to share that with others. Every zine fest I attend strengthens my faith in humanity and reminds me that our voices are powerful and a lot of our experiences and feelings are shared. It takes courage to make a zine and share it with others, but when you do, the connections you make and the community you can build is so powerful!
Do it, do it right now! Dont worry if its "good" or not, if you have something to say and zines are at all of interest to you, thats all you need to get started. It can be as simple or as complex as you want. There is a lot of book structures you can teach yourself online or from books, and if you need help, ask for help; if you need inspiration go to a zinefest or a bookstore. You can do it, I believe in you!
