I made my first zine in college after I got high for the first time. The experience was the exact opposite of what I'd been told and I felt like I needed to put down in a comic what it felt like in case I decided in the future to do it again (fun fact: I did and now I now FOR SURE I can't handle weed >:[ ).
A couple years ago I had an idea for a zine that explored my experience of growing up mixed race, something that was always so hard to explain to people who couldn't wrap their brains around the fact I was more than just one racial identity. It was cathartic and I made it not caring if it sold or not, I just liked that I had gotten some of those painful feelings down on paper. The craziest thing that happened was when people picked it up and said they understand exactly what this felt like. I never expected to have so many people thank me for making something they could connect with, and I have to thank zines and zinefests for making those interactions happen!
