Why do you make zines?

Its fun, it doesn’t have to be a serious work of art and can be done quickly. I like to write, whether about myself or what I observe, its fun to be able to make my own little books. I enjoy working with pen and paper and I like sharing my thoughts.

What was the inspiration for creating your first zine?

The feeling of sadness and wanting a reminder of what will make me feel good. So I made a tiny paper booklet with things that made me feel good. I still keep in my wallet to look at it every once in a while when I am feeling down, makes me smile.

What is your favorite part of making zines?

That it can be done with one piece of paper and pen, no ideas required. There is no huge amount of work needed, can use any materials around your home and just create. It’s expensive to publish a book so the next best thing is to make tiny paper booklets or zines and just share them.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to start making zines?

Just keep a pen and paper or a tiny notebook with you and write down any dumb idea that comes to your head. All those little thoughts rolling around in your brain, just jot them down or draw little pictures to represent your thoughts and you’d be surprised how many ideas you really have to make your own artwork or writting.
