When I was really little, like kindergarten aged, I started to take pieces of paper, my mom's stapler, and make little story booklets. Little did I know, those were the first ever "zines" I would make. I make zines because they are a self-designed form of self expression in its purest form. I have all the creative control, and I love the creative world of the DIY scene and seeing how others express themselves through the artform as well. To me, making zines is a way to get ideas out into the world with a simplicity that can't be matched by anything else. To have the physical form of these ideas is such a treat. While we live in an extremely digital age, the art of zine making is still so pure and is my favorite form of getting information from those who are making their voices heard through zines.
In the words of our beloved, actual cannibal, Shia Labeouf: JUST DO IT. There is absolutely no right or wrong way to make a zine. That's the beauty of them. You can just pick up whatever you want, a camera, a pen, a computer, a paintbrush, and create whatever you want on whatever sort of paper (or not! I would love to see someone get super creative with another substance they could use to print their zines on!) and just get your ideas out into the world. Just do it, make it, share it, and be a part of the beautiful community.
