Why do you make zines?

Kim:
I create zines to reach my community and support body image appreciation which is desperately needed. Many of us live in a world we're constantly being told our bodies are wrong. Body image dissatisfaction can have devastating long-term implications on health and wellbeing. While I've been chipping away at my PhD I wanted to reach out to my community to share insights and practical ways to appreciate themselves more. As soon as I saw my first zine I knew I wanted to make them. I love that they're accessible to everybody, not the few that can get a book publishing deal. Anybody can have a voice when it comes to making zines. I love that!

What advice would you give to someone who wants to start making zines?

I would say, just start. Grab some paper, draw, write, cut and paste - whatever works for you. Don't overthink it, don't judge it as being good or bad, right or wrong. Most importantly, don't be afraid to express yourself. Your voice matters! Making zines has a wonderful therapeutic effect too. You'll never look back!

Is there anything you want people know about you and/or your zines?

Sasha and I are mom & daughter sharing a table at our first zine fest together. Sasha is a High School Junior studying fine arts.

Kim:
I'm careful when writing my zines that they are sensitive to the fact that how we identify and relate to our bodies are different for everyone. My zines aren't about "rah-rah-rah I love my body" kind of thing. They acknowledge the fact that there will be days when we don't love our body (this is normal). Rather, my zines focus on working toward establishing deep respect and kindness toward our own body. I'm an Australian dietitian and my zines reflect principles of Health at Every Size (HAES)® and Intuitive Eating.
