Snatch Magazine by Sophia Louise Mitropoulos
My introduction to zine-making came from Jennifer West's Riot Grrrl class in USC's fine art program. The class' midterm project had us make a zine of our own under any topic we like. As a competitive weightlifter, my professors were constantly pushing me to create work that addressed that part of my identity. In the sport of weightlifting, there are two lifts: the 'snatch' and the 'clean and jerk.' The double entendre of 'snatch' as a women's magazine felt too good to pass up, and thus Snatch Magazine was born.
When I first made this zine, I thought it was simply a one-and-done school project, but I shared it online and was immediately met with requests from the weightlifting community to make it available to purchase. The community that I was already a part of felt underserved, and by making this small project, I suddenly had a growing audience of people who have been yearning for a platform like this to exist. Now, the Snatch Magazine instagram account is the starting point from where I have connected with so many womxn accross the world about their experiences and vulnerabilities in this sport. The growth of this zine has not only helped me develop it into a small business, but it has connected me with people whose interest in my work has developed into lifelong friendships and collaborations.
