Why do you make zines?

I create illustrated zines and comics mainly as a form of self-expression. I find it cathartic and helpful to create a largely visual narrative from my thoughts and experiences. Sharing my work with others is rewarding as it allows me to connect with people about the topics that are important to me, and sometimes help people with their own journeys!

What was the inspiration for creating your first zine?

"Growth" is the title of a zine I wrote and illustrated about my experience with the mental illness Trichotillomania, a compulsive hair pulling condition currently thought to be related to Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. It's a personal look into the various ways which this disorder has affected my life from childhood up to this point (early 30s). I made the zine partly as a cathartic process, and partly to help raise awareness of this condition, which is still relatively unknown, even though it affects 1-2% of the population. The second run of this zine has been riso printed on Envirocare paper by Tree Paper Comics in Melbourne, Australia.
