Why do you make zines?

I started making comics/zines in Graduate School when I took a class from cartoonist Lynda Barry. I went on to be Barry's Teaching assistant, research assistant and to work with Barry for three years. I feel like comics and zines give you the ability to say what you want, to say what you really mean. I guess I make zines because I have something to say.

How do zines help you reflect your cultural identity?

Comics and zines are naturally a good format to communicate with a narrative. A lot of the comics I have done stem from self reflective writing about growing up and my own personal history/heritage and how complicated it is. I think zines are a good medium to try to communicate dense and complex things even if it is imperfect. One of the things I love about comics is who and how you communicate to and with people, it is something someone takes home later and sits alone and reads.
