Tall Walls craft powerful sun-drenched pop songs à la Buddy Holly as well as faster jams in the vein of The Ramones and Sonic Youth. Fusing their love for three-piece harmonies with a surfy and minimalist approach to the guitar and a solid rhythm section, the band refreshingly recycles 60’s pop, punk rock, indie, and even reggae.
Big Sun is a psychedelic synth-surf-rock band from Long Beach. Their rock n’ surf style produces jams that are great to dance to and are sure to make you feel like it is summer no matter what season it is.
Alyssandra’s delicate, yet powerful, arrangements combine with her haunting, beautiful, and soothing sounds to draw you into her “smokey dream world”, capturing a unique side of the folk music spectrum. She has been a part of many incredible local music projects like The Dovelles and Lucky Penny and she also runs the well-loved weekly open mic at Viento y Agua Coffeehouse.
Alicia Murphy was raised across the bridges on the other side of the Port of Long Beach. She is often accompanied by her sister, Sé Reed, who provides harmonies and percussion for Alicia’s original lyrically driven songs. Recently, Murphy released a single called “The Water Garden” along with a mini-zine focused on water conservation and water awareness, a theme that is present in many of her songs. Her newest EP, Towns, Cities, and Little Ditties, was released March 21 and features artwork by local Long Beach artist Dave Van Patten, along with a mini-zine about the foundations of our towns and cities, focusing on sustainable living.
Jesse Carzello (Free Moral Agents/Coaxial) moonlights as “bobby blunders”, making 8-track home recordings of unpretentious pop songs with devotional leanings. He has recruited musician friends Tiffany Davy, Ahmad Butler, Michael J Salter, and Marty Silva to come together to perform this long-incubated material live, and their debut full-length album, best neighborhood band, should be seeing the light of day sooner rather than later.
Greater California is a long-time Long Beach staple, known as much for their annual Holiday Choir event as the stripped-down-to-the-bare acoustic performances that showcase their folk-wave groove. Greater California is the perfect blend of velvety 60’s style folk psychedelia, often inspired by the works of Nick Drake, R.E.M., and the Byrds.
Rapper extraordinaire, bike hero, positivity ninja, and awesome human are just the start to the long list of attributes that describe VerBS.
